Education/Training:

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university required.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.

 Licensure and Certification Requirements

  •  Registered Nurse License Issued by the Kansas State Board of Nursing required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred upon hire, must be obtained within six months of hire.
  • ED RN & Intermediate RN only: Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification preferred upon hire, must be obtained within six months of hire.
  • ED RN and ICU RN only: Trauma Nursing Core Course issued by the Emergency Nurses Association preferred upon hire, must be obtained within six months of hire.
  • Cath Lab RN, ED RN, & Intermediate RN Only: Conscious Sedation Certification required.
  • ED RN and ICU RN only: NIH Stroke Scale Certification required. Must be obtained within six months of hire.

Experience Required:

One to two years of experience preferred.

Position Summary:

The Registered Nurse is responsible for the provision of professional nursing care to patients; including assessment, direct physical care, evaluation, teaching, and counseling.  Ensures delegated care is consistent with patient/family needs.  Functions as a member of the interdisciplinary team.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Demonstrates the ability to assess and evaluate data including: Systematic and ongoing assessment based on patient/family diagnoses/problem list; Diagnostic tests results and other clinical information; Response to medical and/or nursing care/treatment; Behavioral responses; Developmental needs; Cultural responses/needs; Educational needs.
  2. Recognizes and reports changes in patient condition.
  3. Demonstrates patient/family focus in the provision of care, adhering to standards.
  4. Ensures delegated nursing care for patients/families is provided according to plans developed by treatment team and within the confines of the applicable practice acts.
  5. Utilizes critical thinking to evaluate the effectiveness of care.
  6. Assists patients and families to integrate the impact of illness and recovery into their lifestyles through patient education.
  7. Collaborates with care providers in meeting patient care needs.
  8. Performs care interventions in accordance with the Kansas Nurse Practice Act.
  9. Communicates progress towards expected outcomes.
  10. Responds to potential risk/hazard to themselves and others.
  11. Supports effective communication through utilizing systems that enable opportunities for input regarding patient care issues.
  12. Documents assessments, treatments, re-evaluations, and patient responses to treatment per hospital policies and procedures.
  13. Participates regularly in educational activities related to practice. Collaborates with mentor to identify learning needs and seeks experiences to develop clinical skills.
  14. Develops a clinical knowledge base for populations served that is age appropriate, culturally specific and diagnosis appropriate.
  15. Contributes to the establishment of an ethical environment that supports the rights of all participants.
  16. Participates in resolving ethical problems or dilemmas of individuals or systems.
  17. Provides advocacy, protection, and support for patient rights, family involvement, and patient/family decision-making.
  18. Remains calm and functions as a team member during times of stress and crisis situations.
  19. Seeks involvement in activities that promote professional growth and behavior.
  20. Actively participates on appropriate committees and QA/PI activities.
  21. Follows OSHA and other standards for protection against blood borne pathogens.
  22. Uses good body mechanics.
  23. Informs Manager or Chief Nursing Officer of applicable day-to-day situations.
  24. Follows employee health and other personnel and staffing policies.
  25. Maintains patient/hospital confidentiality at all times.

Work Environment:

This position operates in a typical temperature-controlled hospital environment. Work environment generally includes moderate-to-high risk of exposure to blood/ bodily fluids. Risk generally includes moderate-to-high risk of exposure to infectious disease. This position does include occupational risk of exposure to tuberculosis (Category 2). This position includes a moderate to high risk of exposure to Hepatitis B.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear; occasionally required to sit for long periods of time; regularly required to stand for long periods of time; regularly required to use hands to handle, grasp, or feel objects, tools, and controls; regularly required to walk or use other means of mobility; occasionally required to reach with hands and arms above head and below waist; occasionally required to kneel, stoop, and crouch; and occasionally required to use push and pull motion. The employee must frequently be able to lift or move up to 50 pounds using proper lifting techniques.  The employee is required, with or without corrective lenses, to have visual acuity to perform activities such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection; operation of machines; investigating and assessing; determining accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work; and to make general observations.
